Luisa De Cola is since September 2013 Professor Exceptionnelle at the University of Strasbourg (ISIS) as chair of Supramolecular and Bio-Material Chemistry, and part time scientist at the INT-KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany. Since 2016 she is also Professor at the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF). 
She was born in Messina, Italy, where she studied chemistry. After a post-doc at the Virginia Commonwealth University, USA, she was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Bologna (1990) in the group of Prof. V. Balzani. In 1998 she was appointed Full Professor at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands on the chair of Molecular Photonic Materials. In 2004 she moved to the University of Muenster, Germany, as a C4 professor with a double appointment in Chemistry and Physics on the chair of nanoelectronic and nanophotonics. During the German period she was also the vice director of the Center for Nanotechnology (CeNTech) and parttime professor at the University of Twente, the Netherlands.  
She is recipient of several awards, the most recent being the European Research Council Advanced grant award (2009), the IUPAC award as one of the Distinguished Women in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (2011), the international Prize for Chemistry “L. Tartufari” from Accademia dei Lincei (2015) and the Catalan -Sabatier prize from the Spanish Royal Academy of Science (2015). She was elected in 2014 member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and in the same year has been Nominated “Chevalier de la Légion d' Honneur” by the President of the French Republic, François Hollande. In 2016 she was elected member of the Akademie der Wissenschaften un der Literatur of Mainz.  
She is also in the board of several Institutes and Universities as well in evaluation committees for grants and prizes. She is also member of several editorial boards of international journals and in the international committees of conferences. She has a very international group with more than 7 nationalities working in two main research field: 1) luminescent and electroluminescent complexes and their assemblies in defined structures and 2) nano-, porous and degradable structures and gels for biomedical applications.  She has published 330 articles in international peer reviewed journals and filed 36 patents (>13000 citations and H index = 62).
