Prof Vidal-Puig obtained his medical degree from Valencia Medical School (Spain) before training in clinical endocrinology at Granada Medical School (Spain), where he obtained his PhD based on clinical and physiological studies of the relationship between insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism. The award of the Paul Dudley White Fellowship from the American Heart Association funded post-doctoral training at Harvard University, supporting his work with Prof Jeffrey Flier at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston where he published several seminal papers on the genetics and expression of PPARg in obesity and diabetes human disease and in mouse transgenesis and knockout techniques. In 2000 he moved to the University of Cambridge where he developed the programme of obesity and diabetes based on genetically modified mouse models of metabolic diseases.

Prof Vidal-Puig is currently the Professor of Molecular Nutrition and Metabolism at Cambridge University and Honorary Consultant in Metabolic Medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He is Deputy Director of the Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science, Director of the Cambridge Phenomics Centre, and Associate Faculty at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. His programme of research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of lipid-induced insulin resistance and on developing strategies to prevent the deleterious effects of lipids, specifically by modulating fatty acid oxidation and thermogenic mechanisms. Prof Vidal-Puig has authored 240 scientific papers, trained many PhD students and postdoctoral fellows and has received important awards such the Hippocrates International award for Nutrition Research (RAM Principado Asturias), FEBS National Lecturer, Career Distinguished Award Lilly Fundacion or the Maimonides Lecture Award “Managing for competitive advantage in biomedical research”. Vidal-Puig is also interested in developing strategies and innovative approaches to management in academic research intensive institutions. He recently graduated from an Executive MBA at the Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge, and aims to translate the knowledge available in other business related areas into academic management.
