Pura Muñoz Cánoves
Medical Research 2019Doctor of Science. ICREA Research Professor, Professor of Cell Biology at Pompeu Fabra University and Senior Group Leader at the National Centre for Cardiovascular Research.
She is internationally recognised for her significant contributions to the fields of muscle regeneration in physiology and pathology and, more recently, in ageing. She is a member of EMBO and CIBERNED at the Carlos III Health Institute. In 2016, through a UPF-CNIC agreement, she established her laboratory at the CNIC within the Vascular Physiopathology Unit.
Her career has been recognised, amongst other honours, with the prestigious City of Barcelona Prize in Life Sciences, the Pfizer Prize for Basic Research, the Narcís Monturiol Medal for scientific and technological merit, and, in recent years, the La Vanguardia Science Prize.
She is the author of 60 publications, most of them as senior author, in leading scientific journals such as *Cell*, *Nature*, the *Journal of Cell Biology*, *Cell Metabolism*, *Genes & Development* and the *EMBO Journal* (2007), with over 2,100 citations, as well as articles in collaboration with international research groups. She has been a guest speaker at more than 50 international conferences and seminars at the world’s most prestigious centres and universities. In 2017, she was awarded the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant. The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Biomedical Research, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2019 prize to Dr Pura Muñoz Cánoves for her contributions to the molecular mechanisms of ageing, particularly regarding the progressive changes in stem cells in ageing animals and the potential for regenerative medicine.
