Jury rulingThe jury for the Rei Jaume I New Technologies Prize, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2011 prize to Ms MªJose Alonso.
This is in recognition of her outstanding work in the fields of pharmaceutical nanotechnology and nanomedicine, which are having a major impact on the development of new therapeutic solutions, addressing issues ranging from vaccination to the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and cancer. The jury particularly commended the use of: 1) nanoparticles capable of overcoming biological barriers, with applications in the treatment of eye diseases, diabetes and psoriasis; 2) the development of single-dose, non-injectable nanovaccines, which are particularly useful in tackling the challenges associated with disease prevention in developing countries; 3) innovative therapies for the treatment of cancer, involving the design of nanoparticles that act as drug carriers to cancerous and metastatic target cells.
