Jury ruling

The jury for the Rey Jaime I New Technologies Prize, meeting in Alicante, has unanimously decided to award the 2006 prize to Mr José Duato Marín.

Within his distinguished career in the field of information and communications technology, his discoveries—which have had an international impact—in the optimisation of communication network traffic are particularly noteworthy. The advantages of this highly innovative approach include a drastic reduction in the number of resources required to implement fully adaptive routing. This reduction has led all supercomputer designers wishing to implement adaptive routing in their interconnection networks to select Duato’s technique as the most efficient.

These discoveries have a particular impact in the field of supercomputing and have been applied to the Blue-Gene L supercomputer. This is the world’s most powerful supercomputer dedicated to the study of protein folding. The growing demands for data transmission and fault tolerance make network performance a critical factor; consequently, the award-winner’s contribution stands out as one of the most significant for the development of the Information and Knowledge Society.
