He is a pioneer in Spain in research into the impact of chemical pollutants on marine ecosystems and the conservation of marine mammals.

Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Environmental Protection, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2004 prize to Mr Alex Aguilar Vila.

He has organised numerous international collaborative projects, and his work with marine mammals has contributed to the understanding and conservation of these species; for example, by overseeing rescue operations and helping to avert the risk of extinction facing the Mediterranean monk seals.
