Jury rulingThe jury for the Rei Jaume I Prizes for Biomedical Research, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2007 prize to Mr Carlos Macaya Miguel.
For his internationally recognised work in cardiology. A pioneer in the use of coronary stents, he paved the way for the modern era of non-surgical treatment for coronary atherosclerosis. As principal investigator in the organisation of the key clinical trials that led to the worldwide adoption of stents, his work was instrumental in securing US government approval for the use of stents in the United States. Among his other contributions, he pioneered the use of endovascular techniques for the non-surgical treatment of mitral valve and other heart valve conditions, and continues to study the optimal treatment for Acute Coronary Syndromes.
