Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Economics Prize, meeting in Castellón, has unanimously decided to award the 2005 prize to Mr Agustín Maravall Herrero.

This is in recognition of his contribution to analytical research at both the Bank of Spain and the Federal Reserve of the United States of America; at the same time, he has inspired students at the European University Institute (in Florence) and other academic institutions.

His work, spanning several decades, has had a significant impact at a theoretical level, and an even more spectacular impact at an applied level in the analysis of economic time series. In practice, the areas most affected have been seasonal adjustment, cycle and trend estimation, quality control, interpolation, the detection and correction of outliers, and the construction of leading economic indicators. This has led to a unified methodology, with a solid statistical foundation, which can be applied entirely automatically, thereby enabling the processing of extremely large sets of time series. His work has brought about a paradigm shift in the field of applied time series analysis. The significance of these contributions lies in the fact that the quality of such original research depends on the quality of the measurements, and these are highly complex.
