Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prizes in Economics, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2001 prize to Mr José Viñals Iñiguez.

This is in recognition of his significant contribution to research in macroeconomic policy, focusing on the integration of the Spanish economy into the European Union. His important empirical work is based on rigorous quantitative methods and utilises modern theoretical tools such as the intertemporal approach in an open economy. He has carried out pioneering research by developing a methodology to examine the repercussions of the transition from international monetary policies to a single European monetary policy steered by the European Central Bank. He is a leading figure in the advancement of the Spanish economy towards high international standards.
