Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prizes for Economics, meeting in Elche (Alicante), has unanimously decided to award the 1994 prize to Mr Joan Sardá Dexeus

For his scientific contributions to our understanding of the Spanish economy.

For the significance of his work in establishing such important centres for university-level economic studies as the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and research institutions which received an extraordinary boost and revitalisation from him, such as the Research Department of the Bank of Spain.

Particular consideration has been given to his outstanding role in the fundamental change in the Spanish economy that took place in 1959, with the opening up of the economy brought about by the Stabilisation Plan.
