Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Basic Research, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2004 prize to Dr Carlos López Otín.

For the discovery of a series of new proteases, including metalloproteases, which are overexpressed in malignant tumours.

This led him to investigate and discover specific endogenous inhibitors of these enzymes. Some of these inhibitors are currently undergoing clinical trials.

This work has been achieved by a small group over a relatively short period of time, combining basic biochemical studies with advanced molecular genetics techniques.
