Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Basic Research, meeting in Alicante, has unanimously decided to award the 1991 prize to Mr Miguel Angel Alario Franco.

In recognition of his achievements and research work in this field.

His research focuses primarily on the study of extensive defects arising from non-stoichiometry as fundamental aspects of most inorganic materials – a reality that was little known in the early 1970s – and to the establishment of which the selected candidate has contributed decisively, both in Spain and abroad.

A second aspect involves the use of electron diffraction and electron microscopy, including high-resolution electron microscopy, as essential techniques for the characterisation of real solids, a field in which the award winner has been a pioneer, not only in our country.

The third aspect relates to a significant specific area within the study of inorganic materials: ‘high-temperature superconductors’, the study of which led to the formation of one of the first research groups in Europe.
