Cosmic architecture: status of the search for gravitational waves
18 | 10 | 2024The Foundation organised the annual meeting on Cosmic Architecture, to explain the current status of the search for gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo-Kagra collaboration, led by Professor José Antonio Font Roda of the Department of Astrophysics at the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia.
Gravitational wave observations by the network of detectors are revolutionising our knowledge of compact objects of stellar origin (neutron stars and black holes).
The detection of the first signal in 2015 confirmed a century-old prediction of General Relativity.
Thanks to the unprecedented, coordinated action of LIGO, Virgo and dozens of astronomical facilities, this historic detection shed light on open questions in the field of relativistic astrophysics.
