Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prizes for Biomedical Research, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2009 prize to Mr Ángel Carracedo Álvarez.

This is in recognition of his pioneering work in the field of applied genetics. He is an international innovator in the application of molecular biology techniques to the identification of DNA and proteins in forensic samples. He has also introduced and standardised the use of PCR, mitochondrial DNA, Y-chromosome polymorphisms and SNPs, amongst other techniques. His work has a significant impact on forensic medicine, population genetics, pharmacogenetics and biomedical ethics.
