Curriculum Vitae

Madrid, 1948. Professor of the Fundamentals of Economic Analysis at the University of Alicante. Her contributions are characterised by two features: continuity, in terms of the flow of her work, and variety, in terms of the topics covered. The common thread running through all her work is an implicit concern for social issues, particularly equity. Her research has been particularly influenced by Manuel Valdivia, her thesis supervisor; Salvador Barberá; Joan María Esteban; Andreu Mas-Collel, who introduced her to economic analysis; William Thomson; John Roemer; Robert Aumann; and Michael Maschler. Of particular note is her ongoing collaboration with Antonio Villar, with whom she has co-authored a significant proportion of her publications. She has devoted considerable effort to establishing academic standards and managing research programmes. She has been involved in research management in several key bodies: the FECYT, the Ramón y Cajal programme, the ANEP, and the Committee on Singular Infrastructures, CAIS, and worked full-time for the Ministry of Science and Innovation for two years (2005–2007), leading one of the most ambitious research support programmes developed in Spain, aimed at recruiting competitive young researchers: the I3 Programme. Also noteworthy is her role, alongside Antonio Villar, Luis Corchón and Fernando Vega-Redondo, in the creation and consolidation of the Department of Foundations of Economic Analysis at the University of Alicante, which is now well-known and respected beyond Spain’s borders, both for its research contributions and for having established one of the first international PhD programmes, in collaboration with the Universities of Bielefeld, Vienna, Copenhagen and Lisbon, a network that now encompasses 15 centres. Walter Trockel, Manfred Nermuth, Birgit Grodal and Mario Pascoa played a key role in the early stages of this endeavour. In 2014, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University. She is a widow and has two children, one grandchild and another on the way.

Jury ruling
The Jury for the Rei Jaume I Economics Prize has unanimously decided to award the 2017 Prize to Professor Herrero, who, throughout her career, has published more than sixty articles in JCR-indexed journals and seven monographs, whilst also supervising fifteen doctoral theses. The common thread running through Professor Herrero’s research is an implicit concern for social issues, particularly equity. Social decision-making, the assessment of social welfare and issues relating to health economics feature in all her contributions, both theoretical and empirical.
Professor Herrero has managed research programmes, strived to uphold high academic standards within her Department, and worked tirelessly alongside her colleagues at the University of Alicante at crucial moments when new departments and research centres were being established. She has always responded with hard work, talent and dedication, which are now recognised internationally.
