After studying biology at the University of Valencia and completing a doctorate in Bonn (Germany), he began his career as a researcher at the University of Michigan and the National Cancer Research Center, publishing his work in top scientific journals such as Nature Medicine and Cancer Cell. He earned an MBA in 2010 from the Instituto de Empresa.

His aspiration to build bridges between scientific research and the delivery of real solutions to society, especially for patients suffering from serious illnesses, has led him to found a dozen companies based on research projects that have allowed these scientific innovations to be introduced to the market and ensure that people can benefit from them. In total, this has created more than 1,000 jobs, attracted €400 million in investment, and generated more than €5 billion in returns.

Jury ruling

The jury for the King Jaume I Award for Entrepreneurial Proposal unanimously decided to award the prize to Damià Tormo Carulla. The jury praised his career as an entrepreneurial scientist who has built bridges between research and society through the creation of companies. As an entrepreneur, Damià has served as a catalyst for many other projects, promoting quality jobs, attracting foreign investment, and positioning Spain as an international leader.
His entrepreneurial work is characterized by a focus on improving people’s health and quality of life.
Damià Tormo Carulla has demonstrated a social commitment, which he pursues through his philanthropic work, including helping with the treatment of children with rare diseases.
