Jury ruling

The jury for the Rey Jaime I New Technologies Prize, meeting in Alicante, has unanimously decided to award the 2003 prize to Mr Eugenio Coronado Miralles.

For his fundamental contribution to the field of new materials with electrical, magnetic and optical properties. The prize is awarded for a discipline that could broadly be described as ‘inventing matter’, that is, designing materials based on the properties one wishes them to possess; materials that do not occur naturally and cannot be obtained through their direct combination or transformation. This is possible, provided that direct access at the molecular level can be achieved. Its immediate applications extend to such promising fields as nanotechnology, molecular electronics and spintronics. One specific area that stands to benefit from the breakthroughs already achieved by these researchers is, for example, the much-anticipated field of quantum computing. Their work enjoys definitive recognition from the international scientific community, not only for the quality of their extensive body of work but also for its technological implications.
