Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Biomedical Research, meeting in Alicante, has unanimously decided to award the 2006 prize to Mr Francisco X. Bosch José.

For his pioneering work in research linking the human papillomavirus (HPV) to cervical cancer. His contributions in this field include initiating and participating in international epidemiological studies, investigating other environmental factors, and researching the types of HPV most closely associated with cervical cancer, ultimately leading to the development and validation of the first vaccine for the prevention of cervical cancer in women. He has also studied the epidemiology of the hepatitis virus and its analysis by PCR, paving the way for successful vaccines against hepatitis B. Furthermore, he has made significant contributions to the epidemiology of other viral diseases. He has been a member of many key international groups, such as the WHO group on the HPV vaccine, a preventable sexually transmitted disease that causes cervical cancer, which is responsible for 470,000 new cases of cervical cancer worldwide every year. Her work has been essential to the recognition of this pathogen and the successful development of a vaccine that has the potential to eliminate a major cause of cancer among women.
