Íñigo Losada Rodríguez
Protection of the Environment 2018(Bilbao, aged 55) He holds a Doctorate in Civil Engineering from the University of Cantabria and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware. He is currently a Professor and Director of Research at the University of Cantabria. He has over 200 publications in scientific journals and is a contributor to the Special Report on the Ocean (SROCC). He is the founder and first director of the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics, which focuses on the entire water cycle: from Basic Research to its transfer to society and implementation in public policy. Losada’s research is characterised by the integration of the atmospheric and oceanographic processes that shape coastal dynamics with engineering and ecology for Environmental Protection. His ultimate aim is to contribute to the protection, risk reduction and sustainability of natural and socio-economic systems located along the coast.
Jury rulingThe jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Environmental Protection has recognised Dr Losada for his significant contribution to improving the environment and combating climate change. His research into coastal dynamics lays the foundations for the protection of coastlines. In the face of extreme events caused by climate change, he provides tools for implementing adaptation and mitigation measures.
