Curriculum Vitae

PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. ICREA Research Professor at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.

He has been a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and University College London, and a Louis A. Simpson Professor at Princeton, and a Visiting Professor at New York University and MIT. He is a member of the Econometric Society, the European Economic Association, and the Academia Europaea. He is a researcher at CEPR and a research associate at the IFS.

The main contribution of this research is twofold. First, it measures markups (the price-cost margin of individual firms) across the economy, across all sectors and industries, not just in a single market or sector, and over a long time series of 70 years. The second contribution of this research is to analyze the implications of market power on macroeconomics and inequality.

Jury ruling

By acclamation the jury awards the 2025 Rei Jaume I Prize in Economics to Jan Eeeckhout for his important contributions to a wide range of fields including search theory, economic growth, game theory, and empirical industrial organization.

His most influential work with several coauthors is on the measurement of market power. The main finding of this research is that since 1980 firm concentration has increased worldwide across all sectors and industries and has had profound implications for the macroeconomy and inequality.
