Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Biomedical Research, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2012 prize to Mr Jesús Egido de los Ríos.

His work includes key discoveries regarding the development of kidney diseases, particularly the importance of angiotensin II as a driver of inflammation and fibrosis. Among many other discoveries made by his team, this firmly links the control of high blood pressure with the protection of the kidneys – a key concept that also applies to other organs. He has also established a group dedicated to both research and clinical medicine that is regarded as one of the most important in the country.
