José Capmany Francoy
New Technologies 2012Doctor of Engineering in Telecommunications and Physical Sciences. Director of the University Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications, Polytechnic University of Valencia
Jury rulingThe jury for the Rei Jaume I New Technologies Prize, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2012 prize to Mr José Capmany Francoy.
This is in recognition of his outstanding work on the interaction between the fields of optical communications and microwave photonics, which has a major impact on broadband telecommunications, playing a key role in improving very high-speed broadband access networks in buildings and homes whilst significantly reducing costs.
The jury particularly valued:
1. Global leadership in research into ultra-high-capacity transmission and optical processing of microwave signals.
2. Techniques for implementing tunable and reconfigurable filters that enable the operating band to be extended from 10 megahertz to 100 megahertz, making it possible to accommodate all radio services transmitted across all radio frequency bands using a single device.
3. A record in filter selectivity, which allows a specific service to be selected without affecting the others, achieving a quality factor that is three times the previous record.
