Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize in Economics, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 2019 prize to Professor José García Montalvo for his valuable and original research, which is far-sighted and closely linked to economic reality. He also has a gift for seeing the implications for public policy-making. He tackles a wide and varied range of highly relevant topics, which he analyses using advanced techniques and valuable data drawn from unconventional sources. Among the topics covered in his research are unemployment and the mismatch between education and the labour market, as well as the evolution of the credit and mortgage markets in Spain. Also very important in his work is the study of less conventional topics such as economic development or conflict, historical research in the Archivo de Indias on the educational level of the ‘conquistadors’, or on the role of the gender of decision-makers in the granting of credit
