Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Basic Research, meeting in Valencia, has unanimously decided to award the 1998 prize to Mr José López Barneo.

This is in recognition of his fruitful studies into the electrophysiological mechanisms of simple nerve cells, demonstrating the sensitivity of chemoreceptors in the arterial wall to blood oxygen.

His recent, pioneering work, which confirms the existence of potassium channels in arterial wall cells that are directly sensitive to oxygen, is of great importance to the biomedical sciences. He has consistently carried out research of high scientific quality in our country, opening up a new experimental field recognised throughout the world. Many national and international researchers have trained in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, of which he is the director, at the Faculty of Medicine in Seville.
