Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prizes for Clinical Medicine, meeting in Benicásim (Castellón), has unanimously decided to award the 1993 prize to Mr José Mª Segovia de Arana.

For his decisive contribution to the development of clinical medicine in Spain. For his distinguished leadership in the development of the Puerta de Hierro Clinic, which has served as a model for modern hospitals in Spain, as well as his initial contribution to the creation of the Social Security health research fund and, in particular, his insistence on the need to maintain a constant, interdisciplinary relationship between clinical medicine and the basic sciences.

His work can be considered of paramount importance in the reform and creation of healthcare and educational structures in Spain – a task to which he has dedicated his life – and, more recently, in his roles as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Jiménez Díaz Foundation and Chair of the Advisory Council Board on Health. Also noteworthy is his collaboration with a large number of international organisations and, finally, his support for the development of science in general through his involvement in a number of prestigious bodies, such as the Scientific Council of the Ramón Areces Foundation.
