Jury ruling

The jury for the Rey Jaime I Economics Prize, meeting in Alicante, has unanimously decided to award the 1991 prize to Mr Julio Alcaide Inchausti and Mr Antoni Espasa Terrades.

This recognition is in view of the importance of the laureates’ contributions to improving the quantitative understanding of Spain’s economic and financial reality, both in terms of the development of statistical bases and the analysis thereof.

The jury wished to recognise, through the careers of both researchers, the significant progress that has taken place over the last fifty years in economic research in Spain, as well as the continuous improvement in the technical quality of such research, which the two laureates exemplify.

In the case of Mr Julio Alcaide, his contributions to our understanding of the Spanish economy have centred on the compilation of data on its fundamental aspects. The award recognises a lifetime of research, which continues to this day, and which has enabled not only many other researchers to carry out their work but also the interpretation of the behaviour of the Spanish economy.
