Lina Badimón Maestro
Medical Research 2014Doctor of Pharmacy and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Centre at Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona.
Her research has helped to explain many of the processes involved in the formation of blood clots within the veins and the inflammatory response triggered by such clots.
Dr Badimon trained at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in the United States and at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. She has established and led a research group that paved the way for the opening of the Cardiovascular Research Centre, a CSIC centre with over one hundred professionals specialising in research into the heart and the circulatory system.
Jury rulingThe jury for the Rei Jaume I Prizes for Biomedical Research has unanimously awarded the 2014 Prize to Ms Lina Badimón Maestro.
For her pioneering work on atherosclerosis, thrombosis and ischaemic injury. She has distinguished herself through her contribution to defining the prothrombotic effects of tissue factor on thrombosis in atherosclerotic plaques and the effect of LDL and HDL lipoproteins on the growth of atherosclerotic plaques. Her translational research has paved the way for the development of stents to keep the coronary arteries open.
