Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Basic Research, meeting in Elche (Alicante), has unanimously decided to award the 1994 prize to Ms Margarita Salas Falgueras.

For having spent most of her scientific career in the field of molecular biology, particularly in the study of the bacteriophage Phi 20 of the bacterium *Bacillus subtilis*

She has used this non-pathogenic organism as a model to uncover highly significant aspects of viral replication, the regulation of gene expression and the morphogenesis of viral particles.

She is a Full Member of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences.

She has published nearly 200 scientific papers in the most prestigious international journals.

She has served as Director of the Centre for Molecular Biology at the CSIC and the Autonomous University of Madrid, and as President of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry.

She was a student of Professors Alberto Sols and Severo Ochoa.
