New Technologies 2015
Curriculum Vitae

He has established a world-leading laboratory in optical technologies. His work focuses on the study of the optics of the eye and the retina, and the development of imaging, optical and electronic techniques that can be used both to improve patients’ vision and in biomedicine. Some of his designs for ophthalmic instruments are in regular use within this medical speciality.
He has published over 180 research papers (H-index = 43) and has secured grants from the European Research Council, the highly prestigious ‘Advanced Grants’. He has delivered over 200 invited lectures at international conferences and given more than 150 seminars at research institutions.
He has co-founded five technology-based companies to develop some of his concepts and ideas. In 2013, he received the prestigious ‘Edwin H. Land Medal’, awarded by the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), a prestigious award that recognises scientists with an insatiable scientific curiosity in the fields of optics and imaging, as well as their significant contributions as inventors, researchers, Entrepreneurs and educators.

Jury ruling

The jury for the Rey Jaime I New Technologies Prize has unanimously decided to award the 2015 prize to Professor Dr Pablo Artal.

Pablo Artal holds a PhD in Physical Sciences and is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Murcia. He is the co-inventor of more than 20 international patents and the founder of five companies in the field of optics. Building on the optical principle of double-pass, Professor Artal has designed and developed a new generation of aspheric intraocular lenses marketed worldwide. He and his team were the first to implement a real-time adaptive optics system capable of measuring and correcting optical defects in the eye. He has also developed low-cost adaptive optics systems, making the technology more accessible for applications in vision and ophthalmology.
Professor Artal’s work has helped to improve the quality of life for people all over the world.
