Ramón Martínez-Máñez
New Technologies 2018(Valencia, aged 54) He holds a PhD in Chemical Sciences, is a Professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Director of the Inter-University Institute for Research into Molecular Recognition and Technological Development (IDM) and Scientific Director of the CIBER-BBN at the Carlos III Health Institute; he has coordinated 99 national and European projects.Professor Martínez-Máñez has spent more than 25 years working on the design of molecular probes and chemical sensors, which enable the detection of changes in molecules that cause colour changes or fluorescence in these sensors. In this way, he has developed highly reliable sensors for clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring and food quality control, with applications in agriculture and nanomedicine. His research in this field has been pioneering. He has published a total of 393 articles in various high-impact scientific journals.Professor Martínez carries out his work in the Department of Chemistry at the UPV.
Jury rulingThe jury for the Rey Jaime I New Technologies Prize has recognised Ramón Martínez-Máñez for his exceptional contributions to the development of nanosensors with applications in food technology and medicine. The high scientific quality of his work has been applied in various technological fields with a social impact. The technologies developed by Ramón Martínez-Máñez include colorimetric labels for assessing food freshness, nanoparticles for the simple detection of the papilloma virus, and nanostructures for the controlled release of active ingredients against the Mediterranean fruit fly, amongst others.
