Francisco J. García Vidal

Basic Research 2020
Curriculum Vitae

(Madrid, aged 54) PhD in Physical Sciences. Director of the Condensed Matter Physics Centre (IFIMAC) at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

The research carried out by Dr García Vidal over the last 25 years falls within the field of nanophotonics. This new and emerging field of research studies how to control the propagation of light at the nanoscale, that is, in regions much smaller than the wavelength. This new multidisciplinary branch of basic science combines concepts and techniques from classical and quantum optics, condensed matter physics and materials science, and has highly promising technological implications.
He has reviewed 263 publications. His total number of citations is 24,085 (ISI-WoK), H-index: 73 (ISI-WoK). ResearcherID: B-8280-2011.  He has delivered 95 invited or plenary talks and has supervised 13 doctoral theses.
He has been selected on four occasions by Thomson-Reuters as one of the most influential physicists of the decade (2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019). Since March 2017, he has been an editor (DAE) of the journal *Physical Review Letters*. He was the recipient of an ERC Advanced Grant (2012–2017).

Jury ruling

The jury for the Rei Jaume I Prize for Basic Research, meeting in Valencia, has decided by a majority to award the 2020 prize to Mr Francisco José García Vidal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of plasmonics and the interaction of light with nanostructured materials.
