HALDANE, DUNCAN

Premio Nobel de Física 2016 Investigación Básica 2025

Anglo-American physicist, Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics at Princeton University, member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and Fellow of the Royal Society. He won the 2016 Nobel Prize in
Physics along with David J. Thouless and John Michael Kosterlitz, for their theoretical discoveries on the topological phases of matter. Their research revealed the existence of strange states of matter and their behavior, opening the door to new applications in electronics and quantum computing.
Haldane worked as a physicist at Institut Laue-Langevin in France between 1977 and 1981, before joining the University of Southern California. He is known for a wide variety of fundamental contributions to condensed matter physics including Luttinger liquid theory, one-dimensional spin chain theory, fractional quantum Hall effect theory, exclusion statistics and entanglement spectra among others.
Since 2011, he develops a new geometrical description of the fractional quantum Hall effect which introduces the "shape" of the "composite boson" described by a "unimodular" spatial metric tensor field (of determinant 1) as the fundamental collective degree of freedom of fractional quantum Hall effect states.
